Hesitation Under Load. A hesitation, stumble or misfire that occurs when the engine is under load can be caused by a faulty power valve inside the carburetor. A carburetor uses intake vacuum to pull fuel through its metering circuits. As engine load increases and the throttle opens wider, intake vacuum drops. I installed a 57-up distributor at that time too. I even made the stock air cleaner work. I can e-mail you photos if you like. None of this was difficult. The car performs flawless. I installed a 1/4" phenolic plate under it. The carb was bought from a reputable local carb shop who seems to have a few of these older units.
Connected the carb to a stock Chevrolet electric fuel pump while going through a Mallory 4309 High Performance fuel pressure regulator and fuel ran out of the carb into the intake and then into the motor oil. Replaced carb with another Edelbrock 600 CFM that was on another running vehicle and the fuel pressure regulator works fine. In this example of an Edelbrock aluminum carburetor, the MANIFOLD VACUUM port should be used for vacuum advance to the distributor and not the TIMED VACUUM for our Chevelles. Replacement parts are necessary for all vehicles, and it can be difficult to choose the right parts for your particular model.
Issue I'm having is increasing rpms to launch and under load when WOT is applied to launch vehicle it stumbles. Seems to only do it when secondaries are applied. I adjusted the accelerator pump arm springs both front and back, set the idle screws 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 turns and it doesn't change.cleaned the carb and all passages. Now I'm stumped. The vehicle is a 70 El Camino SS 396 with a Q-jet carb. The timing was set to 8 degrees before TDC with the vacuum hose to the advance disconnected and blocked. The dwell was set to 30 while the vacuum advance was disconnected. The engine still stumbles and backfires through the carb.
With any luck, this should work even better on your 3.9's. Trying to find a carb small enough for these engines is tough as the 3.5/3.9 only needs about 350-400 cfm to operate properly. I do like the Edelbrock for ease of maintanence and been able to change out rods and jets. Any questions, ask away. I even went as far as pulling the same load over same route to confirm, the Holley is just better under load.
Ok, my friend and I have been trying for several days to get the stumble out of the carb in his Roadster. Its a Edelbrock 1406 model. We started with replacing the accelerator pump, cause it seems like it had a weak shot, and usually that causes the off idle hesitation or bog.
